Penny Ante Baby
She’s my penny ante baby
I won her late last night
In a card game stacked with longing
My needs put out the light
She listens to my ravings
And keeps the fires burning
And tells me all I need to know
With warm biscuits and gravy
Last night I went to Reno
The stakes were pretty high
I lost her to an inside straight
She didn’t even say goodbye
Now I walk the streets of Reno
Neon hits my eye
Looking for that extra ace
To buy back last nights high
And every night seems longer
Than the one that just went by
It’s too late for the cowboy
Whose boots are caked with sighs
If he only knew she waited
In some dark smoke filled saloon
Looking at each gambler
For the one whose face she knew
Tomorrow is her birthday
She’ll spend it all alone
And blow out the aces
She hangs on her wall
And sleep in the past she calls home.
